OECD calls for anti-spam drive

Governments and the information-technology industry need to step up their attempts to combat email spam, an international organisation says. Spam, or electronic junk mail, disrupts networks, cuts productivity and spreads viruses, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has called on governments and industry members to work together to tackle the problem. New Zealand Computer Society chief executive Doug White said spam emails cost businesses huge amounts of time and money. "It's an enormous waste of money and resources and space and people's time," White said. "While you might think that one email is not a big deal, think how much it costs to get that email out of your system." White said New Zealand computer users received between 20 and 100 spams every day, and it was time-consuming for them to be checked and cleared. He said employers had the double cost of having to deal with spam as well as losing employees' time and productivity. ...
