Instant messaging in the workplace is gaining some respect. Once a socializing tool employers frowned upon as a time and productivity waster, the 10-year-old technology has found practical uses within many companies. America Online spokeswoman Jayna Kliner estimates 43 million Americans use AOL Instant Messenger, including 14 million workers. Instant messaging began in the mid-1990s with Dulles, Va.-based AOL allowing online users to communicate faster than through e-mail. “Who would have thought we’d need something faster than e-mail?
