AOL offers free computer security check

AOL is offering a free downloadable tool that continuously checks the security status of a user's home computer.

The tool, called Active Security Monitor, is available to anyone whether they're an AOL subscriber or not. The software constantly scans computers for things such as anti-virus, firewall and spyware protection, wireless security and updates from Microsoft. It does not include any AOL branding, marketing or advertising, according to AOL spokeswoman Lisa Gibby.
It does however make recommendations for improving security, including paid services.
