Spammers sending high levels of unwelcome greetings in July

Those eagerly awaiting correspondence from friends and family on vacation this summer may be surprised to find that the greeting card in their inboxes wasn't really sent from who they thought it was. As July is the height of summer travel season, spammers are taking advantage of this timing to blast e-card spam to unsuspecting victims.

In the past month alone, SPAMfighter reported a 400% increase in the levels of greeting card and e-card spam. Having tested over 100,000 emails, SPAMfighter noted that spam disguised as greeting cards contain a link that take people to Viagra, pirated software, and phony Canadian pharmacy sites, instead of to legitimate e-card sites.

"People should exercise caution this summer as spammers have been highly active during the month of July," says SPAMfighter co-founder Martin Thorborg. "To avoid being a victim, never click on a link in an email sent from someone you do not know. In the case of e-cards and emailed greetings, visit the company website directly to retreive a greeting, or verify with the other person that they have indeed sent you a greeting first, before you open anything."
