How do I successfully remove viruses/malware with VIRUSfighter?
1. If you are running Windows Me, Windows XP or another operating system where Microsoft's System Restore feature is enabled, you should disable System Restore.

2. Start your operating system in Safe mode before starting the cleanup procedure:
To do this, tap the F8 key on your keyboard during startup, before Windows starts, and select Safe mode from the menu that appears.
Pressing the F8 key at just the right time may be a little difficult (after the firmware POST process completes, but before Windows displays graphical output). If the F8 method does not work, repeat the procedure, but press the F8 key more quickly, or press it several times.
On some (older) computers, the F8 key method may not work.

3. Delete all Temporary Internet Files from your installation:
Windows Start menu -> Control Panel -> Internet Options OR
Windows Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Internet Options
Select Delete files and check "Delete all offline content".

4. Run a scan using the On-demand scanner:
Windows Start menu > Programs > VIRUSfighter > Scan harddisks
Click Clean when the scan is complete or
Run a scan using the Command-line scanner (recommended):
Start a command prompt from Windows Start menu
Start Nvcc.EXE from the ...\VIRUSfighter\NVC\Bin directory
Example:
Type cd\ and press Enter
Type cd VIRUSfighter\NVC\bin and press Enter
Type Nvcc -ald -o -u -cl:2 and press Enter

5. Restart your computer. If error messages or other problems indicate that the computer is still infected, we recommend that you search VIRUSfighter's virus descriptions or other trustworthy security sites to see if there are special actions that should be taken to remove the virus/malware in question.

I have problems with my installation. Is there a program to help?
The repair option which is available from the program Delnvc5 in your installation may be helpful in case of error messages or other signs that the VIRUSfighter installation is incomplete. Delnvc5 resides within the folder \VIRUSfighter\NVC\Bin.
If you still have problems, you should download, install and run Nsupinfo to gather information about your installation. This information is valuable to VIRUSfighter's support personnel when troubleshooting the incident.
After installation Nsupinfo resides in the folder ...\VIRUSfighter\NVC\Bin. The result of Nsupinfo will be stored in a file on your computers desktop.

What does it mean when the green VIRUSfighter tray icon has a yellow exclamation mark on it?
A warning sign with an yellow exclamation mark (!) will appear on the VIRUSfighter tray icon for one or more of the following reasons:

1. When the scanner engine is out or date (more than eight days old). We recommend that you run Internet update (NIU) on daily basis.
2. When the On-access scanner is deactivated.
The On-access scanner is a vital part of VIRUSfighter, and should not be turned off unless you have no other option to be able to complete your task successfully. In such cases, the warning sign is there to help you remember to activate the On-access scanner on again as soon as possible.
3. When the installation requires a computer restart to complete an update.
Mouse-over hints will tell you why the tray icon is displaying the yellow warning triangle.

What does it mean when the green VIRUSfighter tray icon has a red "+" mark on it?
The red "+" error sign will be displayed on the tray icon if the scanner engine is not up to date (more than one month old). We recommend that you run Internet update on daily basis. Some minutes after running Internet update, the warning should disappear from the tray icon.
The error sign will also appear if a module that is supposed to be started according to the configuration is not started.
During the computer's boot process the icon will always have this red mark until all components are started. If the icon remains with the red sign also after start-up is finished, you should investigate your configuration or try the Repair option in Delnvc5. This program for automatic repair or removal of VIRUSfighter resides within the folder ...\VIRUSfighter\NVC\Bin.

What does the message "Files that could not be scanned" mean?
Your operating system will keep certain files open for exclusive access at all times.
No application within this operating system can access these files, ordinary applications like virus scanners and viruses alike. The files vary slightly depending on your operating system.
This is the most likely reason why your scan report tells that some files could not be scanned. The virus scanner will not get access to encrypted or password protected files. This is perfectly normal, and you should not worry about it unless your machine clearly shows signs that it is infected (e.g. automatically sends e-mail).

Is it wise to use VIRUSfighter in addition to other antivirus software?
No!
Different antivirus products may "quarrel", as they often want to scan the same files at the same time. This may cause your PC to show some unpredicted and unwanted behavior
If you experience this problem you may have to start your computer in safe mode to be able to uninstall one of the conflicting antivirus products.
To start the computer in safe mode, press F8 during boot, before Windows is loading.

VIRUSfighter and version numbers - How can I check that VIRUSfighter is up-to-date?
You can find the version number of VIRUSfighter by choosing "Update status..." from the tray icon menu.
"Update status..." will give you the version number of VIRUSfighter itself, as well as the version number and "Last updated" time for "VIRUSfighter Scanner Engine/virus definition files".
To consider VIRUSfighter as up-to-date, the 'last updated' time for "VIRUSfighter Scanner Engine" should be no older than a three of days from the current date.
You should not worry if scanner engine's version number differs from the current version number of VIRUSfighter.
The scanner engine has its own internal version number.

How do I scan my machine for viruses?
On-access scanning is the cornerstone of virus control in VIRUSfighter v5. When you access a file, VIRUSfighter checks it for viruses. The "problem" is that on-access scanning is invisible, and you may wish to perform a more tangible check.
You can:
1. Highlight any file system object, for example the drive letter (C:) in Windows Explorer
2. Click on the right mouse button (see image)
3. Select “VIRUSfighter" from the menu
4. Click on the Scan button for a manual check of all files on the selected drive(s) or directories.

How do I start and stop the on-access scanner
You may want to stop the On-access scanner when you perform system maintenance tasks. When you stop the On-access scanner, it will not start again in the current session or after reboot unless you do it manually. You can stop/start the On-access scanner from a separate entry in the tray icon menu, or from the Configuration editor.
Open the Configuration editor, go to the Components module in the VIRUSfighter configuration tree and unselect On-access scanner from the tabbed dialog Start.

Should I scan my machine on a daily basis?
Not necessarily. If you combine periodic on-demand scans with scheduled scans, the on-access scanner will monitor your PC for malicious code. However, if you perform frequent downloads from the Internet, it's a good idea to scan more often.

Can I automate virus scanning?
Yes. From the VIRUSfighter program group, select Task Editor where you can specify which area(s) to scan and when.

I have got a new authentication key. How do I enter it into the program?
Your new authentication key is like this XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (different number and letters instead of all the X's)

1. To enter it select the green helmet (VIRUSfighter icon) in the system tray (down in the bottom right hand side of your screen by the system clock). Then select Configuration Editor.
2. If you have got your new authentication key by email, highlight the number above by clicking on it with the mouse (left button) at the left hand side and dragging the mouse across the text until it is all highlighted, then release the left button on the mouse and press control and the letter C at the same time.
3. This will copy the key to the clipboard.
4. Click in the white Authentication key field that you have opened (1 above) and press CTRL and the letter V at the same time. This should enter the code into the field

What does it mean when the VIRUSfighter tray icon has a cog on it?
The tray icon is displayed with a cog when the installation is being updated automatically in the background. You should not restart your computer while this symbol is visible.
If the cog symbol remains on the tray icon for more than 20 minutes, we recommend that you run an automatic repair of your installation by using Delnvc5. The DelVIRUSfighter5 program resides in the folder ...\VIRUSfighter\NVC\Bin.

Is there a simple way to check if the Internet Protection module (NIP) is activated?
NIP.EXE should always be visible from the tab Processes in the Windows Task Manager (ctrl+alt+delete).
If NIP, for some reason, crashes or stops unexpectedly, a red "+" will appear on the tray icon. Place the mouse pointer on the tray icon when this indicator is displayed, and you will see the message: "Internet Protection is not running".
The best way to check if NIP is running and doing its job is actually to do a test and see if the eicar antivirus test file (not a real virus) is detected.

I get the error message "Cannot connect to product server" - how do I solve this?
When running Internet Update (NIU) the following error message occurs

Internet Update
Cannot connect to product server:
download.norman.no
WinSock error 10022 WSAEINVAL
An invalid argument was supplied

What to do?
A firewall is probably limiting NIU.EXE's (the Internet Update client) access to the Internet. Make sure that NIU.EXE has outgoing http access on port 80 to all addresses. If your firewall pops-up with an alert asking if NIU.EXE should be permitted to access the network, then please select "Yes" or "Yes Always".
