Recent Natural Calamities in The US Might Give Rise to Online Scams
The Security Researchers at SANS Storm Center warned on June 13, 2008 that the dangerous twisters that slashed through Kansas in the second week of June 2008 and the floods hitting the Upper Midwest would soon be used to launch malicious attacks and donation scams.
The Institute's Chief Technology Officer Johannes Ullrich said that he is tracing the origin of about twelve Websites that have been registered with URLs containing flood and storm names such as www.iowafloods.com, as reported by SecureComputing on June 16, 2008.
Ullrich further said that the majority of these URLs are currently inactive but become active within days. Therefore, there are possibilities that the Websites would host fake donation schemes through OTHERS.
