Sophos Discloses Top Twelve Spam Spreading Countries

The IT security firm Sophos has recently released its new report highlighting the twelve dominating spam-spreading countries of the world for Q1 2010.

As per the report, USA has continued to be the undisputed king of spam, spreading almost 13% of the world's total spam, estimating for innumerous spam e-mails or junk messages everyday.

Interestingly, China has altogether vanished from the list, coming down to 15th position, and accounting for just 1.9% of the global spam, said Sophos in its report.

South Korea, Vietnam and Germany stand at fourth, fifth and sixth position respectively. The UK shares the ninth place in the list with Italy and Russia.

In a blog post, Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos, Graham Cluley stated that China has made a bad name in several countries for being the breeding ground for targeted attacks launched against government networks and foreign firms. However, in the past one year, China has proved that the amount of spam spread from their systems has gradually declined, as per the news published by v3.co.uk on April 28, 2010.

Cluley informed that a fresh group of four countries, comprising Brazil, South Korea, India and the US, is responsible for almost 30% of total spam spread by hacked systems around the world.

The report also states that Asia still rules with around one-third of the world's spam spread by the region. Asia accounts for 33.7% of spam mails. Europe comes next with 31.2%, North America with 16.9%, South America with 14.7% and Africa with 2.6%. The remaining continents estimate for 0.9% of spam mails.

Finally, Cluley added that users should not only safeguard their systems from risks such as spam and malware, they should also make sure never to purchase anything promoted through spam, as per the news published by indiaprwire.com on April 28, 2010.
