Belarus Continues to be Spammiest Nation in Per Capita Category in the World

Anti-virus firm Sophos has published its quarterly ranking of "spampionship" showing Belarus as leader in the per-capita results for the fourth quarter in succession. However, the biggest surprise is Israel's third position in the ranking of per-capita result as it is a small tech powerhouse in Middle East.

Israel has gradually climbed up the per-capita ranking as it rose to seventh in the fourth quarter from twelfth in third quarters last year and came to top three around this time.

The US ranked 27th in the per-capita statistics but became first in terms of volume for the fourth quarter in a row generating 16.4% of spam globally.

Nakedsecurity.sophos.com published a blog of Paul Ducklin, a Researcher of Sophos, said: "Contribution in terms of volume by Israel is not huge (29th position with 0.9% of the world's spam) as compared to small population but per-capita result which is over three times the rate of our benchmark, the US - is just not adequate. Interestingly, Israel has repute for fruitfully incubating IT start-ups during last 20 to 25 years including many companies related to security of computers. This historical fact may be an encouragement for Israeli computer users to scan their systems for malware.

Meanwhile, Belarus, the spam giant, did have its own share of bright news as well: its score has gone down from 27 times as awful as the USA last year to just 4.5 times as bad today, Ducklin stressed.

The latest report reveals that there were five new entries in the per capita chart in this quarter namely Bulgaria, Spain, Macau, Romania and Argentina.

Kuwait, Kazakhastan, Ukraine, Peru and Iceland moved out of the table of per capita Spampionship in this quarter.

In terms of volume, Spain is the biggest surprise which reached to second position.

That was enough to push Spain to seventh place into the per capita Dirty Dozen which was up from 11th place a year ago it featured last time.

It's worth noting that these are spam-relaying countries which means spam is not necessarily sent out by individuals or organizations located in these countries but it means that computers in these locations are harmed by spam.
