Deadly Computer Virus Strikes St. Bernard Parish Council

Nola.com reported on 16th June, 2014 mentioning the announcement by the St. Bernard Parish Council of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana (US), as "it had to pull all items of the agenda for adoption because a computer virus has infected their computers."

Parish computers began sending out junk email apparently due to the virus, which made recipients to block all emails from parish government. Eventually, St. Bernard Voice newspaper, the official journal of parish, did not carry the advertisement of the agenda items, which was required according to law.

Nola.com published news on 16th June, 2014 quoting Roxanne Adams, a clerk of Council, as saying "All ordinances which were introduced on 3rd June (2014) meeting cannot be adopted because those emails were not received."

Nola.com published news on 16th June, 2014 quoting confirmation by Dave Peralta, President of Parish, as "computers of parish became infected on Friday, 13th June, 2014 but the problem seems to have cleared by Monday (16th June, 2014)."

Peralta said on Monday afternoon: "We don't know surely what actually happened but may be someone somehow tied personal computer in our system."

He said that parish has put in some additional firewalls to try and stop it from happening again and engaged some systems people there to look into it.

Theneworleansadvocate.com published news on 16th June, 2014 stating that Council Chairman Guy McInnis introduced measures which are now slated to be voted on 1st July, 2014 and if approved by the council, they could be scheduled for public view in November.

It is alarming that St. Bernard Parish Council is not the only Council in the world to be struck by a deadly computer virus since beginning of June 2014 because Library computers of Barnet Council of London, UK, were infected with a computer virus on 11th June, 2014 which suspended the services.

A notice was posted on the website of Barnet Council informing residents about the situation which is still not been rectified.

The notice read: "We regret that our computer facilities wireless Internet, digital library and automated online renewals services are currently not available and we apologize for the inconvenience."
