Phishing E-mail Campaign Targets Illinois Tollway


According to a warning to users of Illinois Tollway (Illinois USA) dated 6th March 2015, one phishing scam is doing the rounds that dispatches fake e-mails to I-Pass customers supposedly from "E-ZPass Support" asking to clear faulty payments related to unmet tolls, published chicago.suntimes.com dated March 6, 2015.

It maybe noted that E-ZPass comprises 26 toll-collecting organizations within fifteen states of which Illinois Tollway is one, responsible for collecting tolls electronically.

According to Wendy Abrams Spokeswoman for Illinois Tollway, the e-mails are completely unrelated to E-ZPass, I-Pass else any toll route. Chicago.suntimes.com published this.

Abrams says somebody acquired general e-mails that he subsequently spoofed as if they took on an E-ZPass website while threatening about unpaid tolls.

She, however, stressed that there had been no hacking of I-Pass data. Hitherto, there had been reports of such e-mails from 27 customers to her agency.

Nevertheless, Abrams stated that her agency aimed at doubly ensuring that anybody who drove else had plied Illinois roads lately was being cautioned that he/she must erase the e-mail instantly.

According to Tollway officials, the e-mails carry the subject line "payment for driving on toll road" alternatively "indebted for driving on toll road" while come on the electronic mail letterhead of E-ZPass. Chicago.suntimes.com published this.

Illinois Tollway authorities had warned via their agency's website following many complaints about fraudulent e-mails as well as letters that sought payment from customers due to missed tolls.
