Colombian Hacker Jailed for 10 Years for Spying

Theregister.co.uk reported on 15th April, 2015 stating that a Colombian hacker, Andres Sepulveda, has been imprisoned for ten long years for secretly spying on the domestic government's peace talks with Marxists.

Sepulveda received the ruthless sentence in February 2015 after his confession of spying on both sides during negotiations by government with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). More precisely, Sepulveda tapped communications of FARC Commander Rodrigo "Timochenko" Londono and former liberal Senator Piedad Cordoba.

During investigation, Sepulveda was discovered guilty of unauthorized wire-tapping, espionage, malware slinging, breach of communication networks and unauthorized access to confidential information because of which he was jailed for long term. IN addition to all this, he was also asked to pay a fine of $30,000.

The spying was apparently geared to help then-presidential contender Oscar Ivan Zuluaga to dig up filth in opposition to President Juan Manuel Santos during presidential campaign in Colombia in 2014. Investigating officials concluded that the entire effort was planned to damage the peace process and also to disgrace Santos.

The Internet bandit (referring to Sepulveda) apparently acted a worker of Zuluaga. Sepulveda was detained in May 2014 after investigating officials traced wiretaps to undercover offices.

Before hearing the sentence, Sepulveda did not offer any apologies to the FARC but did offer apologies to the armed forces and the Colombian police by reading out a statement to this effect.

Latino.foxnews.com published a statement on 11th April, 2015 quoting him as saying "I deeply regret the damage caused to them and in fact, I regret everyday when I cause damage to their honor and good name."

He also begged everyone who has investigated his case like prosecutors, attorneys, police and judges to pardon him.

Latintimes.com published news on 12th April, 2015 that he is ready to cooperate and collaborate with the government despite being called a lunatic and liar by many.

Sepulveda added that mixing his work with politics has been his worst mistake and said: "All my actions to fight against terrorism became death wounds when I got myself involved in elections campaign in 2014."
