Eddie Bauer Asserts Malware Hit its Retail Store PoS Systems

Retail store Eddie Bauer based in Bellevue, Washington declared on August 18, 2016 that malware had infected its PoS systems letting unauthorized parties reach customers' credit and debit card data during January 2-July 17 this year (2016). But customers who made purchases via the eddiebauer.com website didn't have their card data affected.

Following the announcement, KrebsOnSecurity.com, on 5th July 2016, contacted Eddie Bauer because it (the website) had known about the breach from many people engaged in combating scams against financial institutions in USA. Everybody of those people stated they had detected a fraud scheme involving client cards wherein the most common aspect was that those cards had been lately utilized at certain 350+ stores of Eddie Bauer. The scam combating specialists stated that the breach and resultant theft seemed as dating back to not before January 2016.

A free service of ID-theft protection has been offered from Eddie Bauer to all clients impacted, for a 12-month period. However, this doesn't seem to help much if crooks keep managing making fraudulent buying through fake payment cards in the name of the actual card-owners. Consumerist.com posted this, August 18, 2016.

Presently, a notification process is underway from the retailer to inform clients who may've had their card data accessed. Consequently, Eddie Bauer is advising them to minutely examine their statements-of-account and also to continue monitoring them. Any client who thinks his/her card may've got fraudulently used then he/she must instantly talk to their card issuer/bank. The retailer has also informed the different networks of payment cards indicating they get into a coordination task with the banks disbursing the cards for watching out if any fraudulent activity is occurring involving the cards utilized in the aforementioned time-period when clients may've got affected with the compromise.

Meanwhile as per a press-release, retailer Eddie Bauer describes the attack an advanced form of fraud executed against several retailers, hotels and restaurants of which Eddie Bauer is one.

One Eddie Bauer spokesperson expressed gratitude on behalf of the retailer hinting at the outreach; however, stated the company had not been reported of any complaints claiming fraudulent operations from card associations or banks.
