APT29, APT28 Alleged Attackers of U.S Think Tanks

A Russian team assumed to have attacked several PC-networks of the Democratic Party apparently is concentrating on think tanks in Washington, USA that constructs policies related to Russia, says CrowdStrike a cyber-security company.

A think tank in USA is termed for organizations which carry out research related to economics, culture, social, technology, military and politics.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, security researchers at CrowdStrike detected certain number of infiltrations into the PCs of a particular think tank. Apparently, those are from APT29 or Cozy Bear suspected to be the Russian team.

When security agencies examined this team's operations they presumed the team possibly was connected with the intelligence workforce namely 'FSB' of Russia. This department was earlier under the guidance of Vladimir Putin when he was still not the President of Russia. Softpedia.com posted this, August 31, 2016.

CrowdStrike states that APT29 represents those cyber-attack teams which allegedly accessed the DNC in 2016. APT29 impaired DNC's servers during 2015 summer that didn't ever get noticed until April 2016 when APT28 impaired the same DNC system.

Director and Senior VP (Vice-President) James Andrew Lewis for the target think tank described the assault "A-Badge-of-Honor."

Lewis didn't like the attack on his think tank, so he expressed to Defense One. He opined that Russians should run more independent institutions rather than seek Mr. Obama to give them directions secretly. They shouldn't prove that they're good secret agents just to impress their higher officials.

Dmitri Alperovitch Founder of CrowdStrike stated that less than 5 think tanks as well as ten staffers trying to establish communication with Russia became targets of attack under the extremely personalized campaign.

A cyber culprit who's able to reach a think tank's research work gets to know that country's governance with respect to their future plans and other programs getting explored.

The name of the think tank targeted wasn't mentioned because of CrowdStrike's principle of maintaining confidentiality. However, according to Patrick Tucker, Reporter with Defense One, who talked to CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies) he learnt that the think tank indeed encountered cyber assault recently that its staff fended off.
