TorrentLocker Ransomware Comes in Bulk E-Mails Targeting Internauts

Fraudulent websites in guise of lawful web-pages supposedly belonging to the Australian Federal Police, Australia Post as well as New Zealand Post have been found in e-mail spam delivering ransomware among local Internauts.

The ransomware TorrentLocker, says ESET a cyber security company, arrives in bulk e-mails that entice potential victims to download malware and web-pages that tell the ransom amount and method of paying it.

The Slovakia situated company further indicates in one technical report that even more astonishing is that the ransomware in question doesn't overtly modify its mode of operation.

According to ESET researchers, the TorrentLocker ransomware comes in the same form as it did two years back. The malware is well-coded having minimal flaws and its encryption is very strong too. Softpedia.com posted this dated September 5, 2016.

The present TorrentLocker variant targets users of very specific regions while issues its instructions in the local language of the victims and demands the ransom in the local currency as well. It further encrypts all of the victim's data files and folders other than some that are essential for letting the computer run, elaborates Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald continues that this latest strategy of encrypting almost every data-file generates consequences so as to require very specific backup types necessary for adequately reinstating that computer which has gone through a TorrentLocker encryption.

ESET has found that TorrentLocker's owners are distributing spam that feigns to be an invoice associated with certain local utility firm which strikes end-users within the countries of Turkey, Italy, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Spain, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, the UK and Australia.

The security vendor further states that the coding of TorrentLocker is so hard that it doesn't spread to Ukraine, Russia, China as well as astonishingly the U.S where nearly all ransomware samples have thus far targeted. In general, ransomware attacks are extremely vibrant inside New Zealand and Australia.

Meanwhile, there's little to panic should people encounter ransomware attacks only they require continuing to apply best practices for restoring encrypted data. They should also use proactive safeguards that will considerably mitigate dangers and effects of malicious software such as ransomware.
