Military Cyber Command of South Korea Suffers Embarrassing Hack

South Korea says that hacking of its cyber command center of military has taken place last month when officials discovered malicious code in its system. Still it is not clear how malicious code entered the system, although its objective was a "vaccine routing server" used by the cyber command of the country.

A legislator of the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea, Rep. Kim Jin-pyo, told Yonhap News Agency in a telephone interview that the hacking targeted the "vaccine routing server" of the cyber command.

Kim is a member of the national defense committee of the parliament. As suggested by Kim, the probability of leaking or stealing sensitive data is less because targeted server was not connected to military intranet.

Hackread.com posted on October 1st, 2016, stating that although North Korea is the suspect for this attack, but investigators are looking for finding facts and thus officially will not blame anybody till the investigations have been completed.

Kim said that, "a malicious code has been identified and it seems to have taken advantage of the vulnerability of the routing server".

The attackers didn't steal any data from the hacked server, which has been secluded from the rest of the network and is presently under investigation. Defense ministry of South Korea also confirmed the incident on Saturday by saying that Internet network of military did not experience any downtime due to the breach.

The server's task is security of computers, which military has for the purpose of Internet-connection. Approximately 20,000 computers of military are believed to be connected to server.

One of the most popular state-sponsored hackers is Unit 121. Unit 121, elite group of well-trained hackers, is only focusing on the cyber espionage. The investigation is going on to find out the origin of the hacking. It is not yet confirmed about the involvement of North, however noted that the military authorities were also leaving that option on table.

It has been confirmed later about cyber command hacking by defense ministry, and they also said that it is trying to find out how the malicious code entered the system. It also said that despite this incident, the internet system of the military remains up as well as running.
