A Data Management Company Encounters Hack Losing Minimum 58m Personal Records

A hacker scouring unprotected databases managed hijacking 58.8m or more records while probably up to 258m stacked with MBS (Modern Business Solutions) a monetization and data management company chiefly offering services to real estate, employment and automotive industries.

Occasionally a victim of hack knows his circumstance just like when hackers attacked Carefirst the Blue Cross Blue Shield Company from which more than 1m records were seized. At other times, like with the latest hack into MBS, nobody even knew the firm existed, explains Risk Based Security a security company.

Using a Twitter name @0x2Taylor, the hacker seemingly posted the captured database several times on the Web during the weekend. The exposed data contained names, e-mail ids, birth dates, occupations, vehicle data and IP addresses. Initially, it wasn't clear on which category of users the data was connected to. However according to Goddijn of Risk Based Security (RBS), the company's researchers managed detecting admin records contained inside the database and concluded the info was for linking ownership with MBS. Scmagazine.com posted this online dated October 13, 2016.

RBS coordinated with Databreaches.net the breach reporting website for getting in touch with MBS and informing it about the hack. While MBS didn't release an answer, RBS figured out that since the incident, MBS secured its database.

Here, some confusion exists regarding the true counting of the credentials published. While it is a minimum 58m, the number could reach a maximum of 258m from the database's assessment done. Presently, investigation is on, yet the exact amount of data leaked and who all were impacted might never be known.

Unfortunately, wrongly configured MongoDB databases occur quite commonly. Usually, RBS would recommend many things regarding being wary of the place one's private information is getting saved as well as to reply suitably when notifications about any data hack are made. Within the current instance, all that one can do is spend for getting a data and credit monitoring facility so as for ensuring the person is generally safeguarded for, one may never know the time he may get attacked while remaining unaware about it as well.
