India’s TRAI Plans Utilizing Block-Chain Technology for Prevention of Telemarketing Spam

According to Business Standard's reports, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) is preparing for use of block-chain technology to stop unwanted telemarketing phone-calls.

Trai asserts regulators will become powerful with the technology as they can then exactly trace the origin of annoying telemarketing spammers. The spammers reportedly use telephone numbers of ten digits and which are unregistered so they can eschew tracking.

TRAI has as well produced one draft of Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations 2018 by which an INR 76,00,000 per month will be levied on operators who fail towards curtailing text messages and spam calls. Guidelines in the draft further recommend adopting block-chain technology for making sure telemarketing messages get distributed solely for subscribers.

Till June 11, 2018, comments from the general public are invited regarding the draft proposal. Text messages and spam calls arrive from various places like the departmental stores people visit every month or even the shoe store that someone went just once for buying a sock. Evidently, the mass telephone calls and text messages which are usually quite annoying are from certain telemarketing services which have registered themselves with Trai. Newindianexpress.com posted this June 4, 2018.

According to Mr. Sharma, in India 30bn business related messages routinely get dispatched, among which a huge bulk is unwanted. As of now, 230m subscribers are trying to obtain TRAI's registry of "Do not disturb" that began during 2010. Nonetheless, India hasn't yet been able in acting against telemarketers.

A lot of subscribers rely on apps such as 'Truecaller' for preventing unsolicited calls as well as text messages. A phone call which shows one red label should be marked spam while left unanswered.

TRAI's draft bill of Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations 2018 is open to everyone for discussion till 11th June. It is strikingly suggested in the regulation that there must take place a periodical review of permission for getting commercial communication for ensuring there's no mishandling of the policy.

In 2017, Cointelegraph released one report detailing one RegTech initiative based on block-chain with the intention to improve consent compliance as well as management within the sphere of digital based identification.
