Personalized phishing assaults target government agency, embassy officials of several nations

A cyber-attack scheme lately used TeamViewer in a weaponized form along with malicious software masked as one highly confidential document of US government as the attacks hit many embassies' officials inside Europe. Security investigators from Check Point Software Technologies recently uncovered targeted assaults getting launched serially which aimed at officials belonging to embassies and finance agencies of governments of several nations.

It is from at least 2018 that the assaults are ongoing, which used the malicious software in many different editions. The security investigators identified a server utilized for the cyber-attack scheme that while freely available on the Net contained identifying information and screenshots picked from compromised PCs.

The contamination of PCs starts with one typical phishing electronic mail having one malicious attachment that supposedly is USA's highly secret document. As subject line the e-mail displays "Military Financing Program" while its attachment is an .XLSM file which shows one logo of the United States Department-of-State that makes the message seem legitimate.

The malicious software, files crafted to phish off things along with other objects utilized within the assaults seem like they are from one single person going by an online handle EvaPiks. He has over time been rigorously working on one illegitimate Russian-carding domain. But, it isn't yet wholly clear whether that person is as well the only one for executing the assaults too, alternatively whether other people are playing a role. According to Manager Lotem Finkelsteen of Check Point's Threat Intelligence Team, the company's findings indicate EvaPiks as being responsible for developing the complete series of contaminations. www.darkreading.com posted this dated April 22, 2019.

Meanwhile, the countries whose embassy officials have been hit with the attacks hitherto include Bermuda, Kenya, Italy, Liberia, Lebanon, Guyana and Nepal. Within every case, it looked as though the targeted officials were carefully chosen while they played roles in connection with government revenues as well as the financial departments, indicating some form of financial intent behind the assaults. Hitherto however, according to Finkelsteen, there is little sign of the attacks trying towards acquiring admission into any bank A/Cs of the governments which got targeted.
