Sudbury MPP tightens his social media security after the phishing scam on the Facebook

Somebody pretending as the Sudbury MPP (Member of Provincial Parliament) - Jamie West, messages his friends. An MPP is an elected Legislative Assembly member in the Ontario Province of Canada.

In those messages, that individual asks the friends of West to click a link. Clicking on that link opens a page, where the people have been asked to enter many of their personal information. But many people questioned who they have been dealing with, and also messaged the actual Jamie West (i.e. the Sudbury MPP).

The Sudbury MPP says he is lucky that people got suspicious, and then informed him that his Facebook account was hi-jacked, in what is called as phishing scam. West says "I had a bunch of people sending me messages [saying] 'someone's sending me messages pretending to be you'".

At first those people thought that Facebook account of West was hacked, however in reality what happened was somebody has taken the profile picture of West. Then that person creates a new account using name of West, and started messaging the people in town. West says "they would just say 'Hello', and then they would tell them I just got this $100,000 grant, you should apply for it".

West says he has already posted on his Facebook account that if anybody was approached in this manner, then they should know that it was not him and thus should not become a victim. West also says that a few of his friends has reported this incident to the Facebook, who investigated and then de-activated that fake account within a few hours.

West added that he isn't aware that anyone was compromised by this scheme, but still he is taking measures and steps to tighten his social media security.

As a politician, his constituents were reassured by the Sudbury MPP that he doesn't offer any kind of services on the social media. He says "even though the internet makes it easier for people to contact us, we don't want to do business over the internet just because it's so easy to pretend you're somebody else".

Though a politician relies highly on credibility and reputation, West says he don't think his account got compromised in this online attack as it was caught quickly.
