Murfreesboro City’s Bill Payment Website of Water Department was hacked by the Iranian Hackers

A government website of Murfreesboro city was found hacked on a Saturday (i.e. on August 3, 2019). The Murfreesboro city discovered on the morning of August 3, 2019, that their website of bill payment for the water as well as sewage department was hacked. This hacked site appears after the users try accessing their LINK account from city's Water Department site.

An image of Iranian flag along with Guy Fawkes mask was displayed on the compromised webpage. Below the image it says "Hacked by Iranian Hackers" as well as "Hacked by Mamad Warning". Further below on the compromised webpage is the message, which says "we are always closer to you. Your identity is known to us. Your information is for us ;) take care".

So, immediately the department has shut down their website and then launched internal assessment in order to determine the extent and source of this hack. The internal assessment has determined that this compromise was limited to their online portal page. Right now, the identity of hacker or hackers is not clear.

"After a fuller assessment, Information Technology for the City of Murfreesboro indicates that a compromise this morning to link to an online portal of the Water Resources Customer webpage was limited to one script page," the City tweeted.

Mike Browning, Public Information Officer of Murfreesboro City, said that this hack has been isolated to online access for city's water department bill pay having 2 different access points. The hack is not affecting entire website. Browning also added that it appears the hackers have gained access to online portal through the old scripts.

Customer information is safe and was not compromised in this attack, Browning said. But as the website was shut down temporarily, the customers face problems like not able to pay the bills online till it's back up.

The IT department of the Murfreesboro city has been working on recovering webpage along with updating security measures. Shane McFarland, the Murfreesboro Mayor, said that "our staff is investigating. We don't have any more information at this time, but will keep everyone updated as we find more details," as reported by News Channel 5.
