TCD Increases Spam Defense

According to the news published by Silicon republic on May 28, 2007, during a trial of a new email service, Trinity College Dublin (TCD) was successful in stopping 11.1 spam emails from reaching its student and staff population of 20,000 within 20 days.

By using their original email system, they were only able to capture spam at an 80 pc volume. But on accessing Microsoft Exchanged Hosted Server (EHS), the 11.1 spam emails measured for 92pc of TCD's overall email traffic of 12.1 million.

As per the service level agreement, the Microsoft has decided to isolate 1 email out of 250,000. This constructive approach demands help and cooperation from Trinity College Staff and Students.

The EHS of Microsoft recognizes spam and infected email, and automatically places it in an isolation zone, so that the email cannot be delivered to any user. This process of isolation can be done online so that the email users can confirm that no authentic mail has been mistakenly identified as spam email. And if there is any such event, such email is taken from isolated zone, and delivered to user's normal email client.

As per the news published by Silicon republic on May 28, 2007, deputy director of IS services at Trinity College Dublin, John Murphy said that the Microsoft's EHS is a great combination of both effective email management and value of money and it is one of the best investments they have ever made.

The previous spam filtering product is replaced by the fresh and improved Microsoft's EHS, however, for any remaining spam; users should check their folder of 'suspected-SPAM' in mymail.tcd.ie. Previously available 'White lists', now, are not in use. With a facility to report false positives, the improved and accurate EHS ensures all authentic emails to arrive in time.

The security business manager of EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) Jordi Munoz-Royo, said about EHS that billions of email gives insight about how spam is developing on a global basis and it is this ability, which distinguishes them from their competitors, as per the news published in Silicon republic on May 28, 2007.

Royo further added that a virus outbreak in Far East could be stopped there itself, rather than waiting for it to reach Europe and spread in rest of the world.
