Phishing in Time of the Global Economic Crisis
With the economic crisis around the world, consumers need to be more cautious than ever with their financial assets.
"Scam artists are experts at exploiting consumer fears and imminent situations." Comments Henrik Sorensen, co-founder of SPAMfighter. "The financial crisis is no exception."
Phishing is when a scammer sends a fake e-mail, linking to a fake site where they in turn ask for personal information from the e-mail recipient. This information is usually bank information, which is then used to hack in to their personal bank account. Phishing is very hard for a user to detect as both the e-mail and the site they are redirected to look very legitimate.
"All e-mail users are at risk of becoming a victim of financial e-mail scams and identity theft, which is one of the biggest threats in the United States today. Nevertheless, protecting your e-mail account with the proper program could avoid and lower the risk of falling victim to this scam" Says, Alix Aranza, Managing Director for SPAMfighter in North America.
The amount of attention on the global economic crisis has caused consumers to be more attentive to their financial assets, and in turn, an easy target for phishers. Citibank, Washington Mutual, and PayPal have all fallen victim to phishing attacks under their name.
Anti-spam developer, SPAMfighter, warns users to take extreme caution when giving over personal information via the internet. Never open a link sent through a spam mail, and when in doubt, always contact the bank through the telephone number given on the bank statements.
