Network Box – 2/3rd UK Firms Don’t Take Their Web Security Seriously

The latest research conducted by Network Box, based on 440 responses from firms with employees between 200 and 10,000, reveals that almost 2/3rd of UK companies do not take their Internet security seriously.

The survey's result discloses that almost 65% of businesses do not devote time in managing their security infrastructure, while 15% of them spend less than half an hour in a week managing their IT security.

Internet Security Analyst for Network Box, Simon Heron, said that IT professionals think that they just need to install anti-spam and antivirus programs on their systems, and everything is done. Unfortunately, this is not the way, as reported by CHANNEL BUSINESS solutions on January 7, 2009.

Hence, security analysts recommend that antivirus as well as anti-spam programs should be updated to avoid all kinds of phishing attacks.

Security analysts also said that users' security is heavily dependent on them. That is why employees should be aware of the Internet threats. They also claimed that cyber attacks have developed and become more sophisticated with every phishing attack.

In spite of the expansion in phishing attacks during the past three years (2006-2008), the survey reveals that almost 1/3rd of the firms (37.3%) do not safeguard themselves from phishing attacks.

Simon adds that phishing protection will be very crucial in 2009. In an economy engulfed by the recession, either hackers will attack business coffers or employees will be tempted to click on 'get rich quick schemes' which hackers use to lure their victims.

While this is the scene which will emerge in 2009, Network Box claimed that cyber attacks, spyware, phishing attacks will increase in number in 2009.

File sharing links on social networking sites is another important reason which may play a critical role in increasing phishing and spear attacks in 2009. For example, photo albums, and YouTube videos exchanged between friends can help attackers to distribute harmful material with the aid of these shared file.
