Monroe Credit Union Target of Latest Phishing Fraud

According to the news reports published by monronews on January 12, 2009, a phishing e-mail purporting to be from the MCCCU (Monroe County Community Credit Union) has targeted several local residents of Monroe County (USA).

The reports also disclosed that the fraudulent e-mails reaching the inboxes of the County's residents address them as members of the MCCCU and inform that the credit union has temporarily deactivated their accounts due to failure of bill clearances.

The e-mail then says that in order to reactivate their account, recipients need to furnish their complete account details by accessing account. It further said that they must do as directed in the e-mail. When the process would be completed, the e-mail informs, recipients would be sent notification via e-mail, informing them they can access their account whenever they want.

Furthermore, to sound legitimate, the e-mail assures recipients of complete confidentiality of their information and it would be stored within their protected database. It also warns that if recipients fail to furnish the necessary information, then their account will be automatically erased from the MCCCU database.

The investigating officials said that both members and non-members of MCCCU have been receiving the hoax e-mails. Describing the e-mails as a typical phishing frauds, the officials say that the e-mails try to trick users into giving away account details and other private data so that their identities could be stolen or accounts drawn down. The e-mail is apparently coming from Canada

Meanwhile, the security officials of MCCCU have issued a phishing alert on the credit union's official website https://www.mcccu.org/. In the alert, the officials repeatedly caution the e-mail's recipients as well as urge them to avoid such kinds of e-mails and never hand over personal information. Just as in the past, MCCCU officials again suggest consumers to call or visit the MCCCU office directly if they want to know anything about their account's status.

In addition, the phishing alert also assures customers and non-customers about the security of their financial data. Alert further reveals that advanced technology is used to ensure safe online transaction with the MCCCU.
