E-mail Marketers Concerned About Increasing Phishing & Spam Attack

JupiterResearch, which recently conducted a survey sponsored by Goodmail, has found that marketers' main concerns for 2009 are increased phishing and spam attacks together with even more image and e-mail blocking by ISPs.

The poll, which questioned 202 e-mail marketers, found that the marketers' aim is to successfully market through e-mail in 2009, but this is the major concern. The respondents said that the "growing phishing and spam attacks" were their most imminent anxiety, with 53% of those surveyed describing it as a top concern and 45% describing "more image and e-mail blocking by ISPs" as the top concern in 2009.

While 27% of respondents expressed concern with other issues relating to computers like maintenance of their utility with subscribers, 11% said that their e-mail software was at risk due to "growing consumer inclination for mobile and social communications".

Commenting on this issue, Peter Horan, Chief Executive Officer of Goodmail, said that it is clear that marketers are extremely concerned about challenges pertaining to phishing and spam than they are of dwindling macro-economic conditions, as reported by ITnews on January 27, 2009.

Furthermore, the survey indicates that marketers see e-mail as the most targeted and cost-effective medium of interaction with consumers. Additionally, they think that to remain competent, their e-mails need to be viewable, trusted and delivered to recipients. However, they often do not accomplish this due to spammers' and phishers' spurious activities.

Therefore, in order to adapt with phishing tactics, marketers need to continuously improve their e-mail application utilities as well as strategic services that would be beneficial for both self-service technology suppliers and full-service agencies, according to JupiterResearch. However, all this can be achieved if end-users are adequately aware of phishing and spam.

Additionally, end-users also need to know about two phishing scams that occurred recently, one pertaining to Twitter accounts and the other to Google AdWords.

Meanwhile, JupiterResearch's report published in January 2009 also discussed spam in the coming days. It suggested that while the amount of spam would keep on rising, the same reaching end-users would remain steady in the next few years.
