Liberal Democrat Activist Cautions Mid-Sussex Online Users against Tax Rebate Scam

As per the recently released news, local political promoter in Mid-Sussex, Serena Tierney, is cautioning people to be careful of a phishing mail scam currently circulating on the Net and hitting netizens.

It is said that the phishing mail informs that recipient that he is entitled to get a tax rebate. Therefore, the mail comes with an attachment of 'claim form' to fill in.

Phishers want people to fill in the form and send it back with their personal and financial information relating to the tax rebate.

The alert campaigner states that it is an endeavor of hackers who search for opportunities to commit identity fraud.

The activist of Liberal Democrat Parliamentary states that she also received one of these mails. At first glance, it seemed that it had come from Her Majesty Revenue and Customs (HRMC) mail addresses but it ended with '.co.uk' whereas the authentic government addresses end with '.gov.uk', as reported by midsussextimes on July 2, 2009.

Serena also claims that "Haywards Heath (Mid-Sussex, UK)" is one of the top 25 sources for ID fraud in the UK. Hence, it is not astonishing if phishers attack online users, including taxpayers, in this area.

In the meantime, HRMC has got to know about the scam and has posted an alert message on its official website to inform online users that they should be careful of fake mails pretending to have been sent by HMRC and give a tax rebate.

Moreover, HMRC announces on its website that it does not notify customers about tax rebate through email or invite them to fill in an online form to get the tax rebate.

HMRC advises online users not to access the website whose link given in the email or divulge any private or payment details.

If taxpayers receive a mail asking for information like the one asked in the mail circulating in Mid-Sussex and users are doubtful of its legitimacy, then they can send the mail to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk to ask for assistance, said HMRC on its website.
