Bredolab Tops on December 2009 Threatscape Report of Fortinet

In the last week of December 2009, Internet security company 'Fortinet' released its December 2009 Threatscape report.

Fortinet disclosed in its new report that the total volume of malware reached pre-October 2009 level in December 2009 after two months of record activities on account of Pushdo\Cutwail, Zbot and Bredolab.

The report also revealed that the Bredolab loader again occupied the leading position with a vengeance in December 2009, representing an enormous 66.5% of overall discovered malware activity. While the Bredolab's threat last for numerous days, it surpassed all other malware activity in December 2009.

"Tis the Season to Be Jolly - Not1" is another important discovery of Fortinet for the month of December 2009. The top three mail threats featured in the month and predictably drowsed the spirit of the festive season since shopping and money were two critical parts of it. Moreover, ZBot attacks continued during the holiday season because it was the busiest time of the year for online shopping and online banking.

Fortinet further said that the exploitation of MS08-067 (popularized by Conficker worm) was the most active attack in December 2009. The second harmful activity for this period was Waledac botnet traffic.

The month of December 2009 also proved extremely fruitful in terms of vulnerabilities and zero days. As per the statistics, the security company described 147 new vulnerabilities and found around 1\3rd of them were vigorously targeted.

Derek Manky, Project Manager, Cyber Security and Threat Research Fortinet, claimed that the growth in cyber criminal activities witnessed in 2009 would continue in 2010. There are a number of users to be attacked, the infrastructure is in right order along with expansion funds, and there are several new delivery techniques like social media networks to ensure cyber criminal activities, as reported by Fortinet in the fourth week of December 2009.

Manky also said that it became clear that the cyber security world would be ready for an untamed ride in 2010 - all features conducive for an ideal storm in cyberspace.
