Spam Mails Increased Significantly during Q1-2013, Reports Commtouch

Commtouch the provider of cloud-based security software recently declared its Internet Threats Trend Report for Q1-2013, emphasizing that there's been an enormous increase in unsolicited and perilous electronic mails during the period.

Remarking about this observation, Director of Threat Research as well as Market Analysis, Avi Turiel of Commtouch stated that the remarkable increase during January-March 2013 in unsolicited as well as perilous e-mails indicated that interaction through electronic mails continued to be a major attack medium. E-mail continued to be the greatest means for communicating within private as well as business quarters in just the same degree. Consequently, cyber-criminals found it a most alluring target, Turiel added. Softpedia.com published this dated May 2, 2013.

The report comes after one new combo report by StopBadware along with Commtouch, according to which, 40% of people owning Internet sites started thinking differently about their suppliers of hosting services ever-since a certain website was infiltrated.

Over the entire third quarter of 2013, a mean 97.4bn junk e-mails along with 973m virus-laden e-mails were distributed globally, daily. In March 2013, there was an essentially large quantity of spam when 117.8bn spam mails were distributed daily at the peak time.

Spam quantities became twofold during December 2012-March 2013, accounting for a 98% rise.

Moreover, according to the report, there was a remarkable rise in phishing too, with the volume increasing to over 74% from December 2012 to March 2013.

Nevertheless, the biggest rise was with virus-laden e-mails when e-mails laced with familiar malicious programs accounted for 157% more during March 2013 over the previous December 2012. And as regards virus attacks, there was an astounding 290% increase.

Meanwhile, the traditional junk e-mail touting fake penny stock prices that had nearly wholly gone extinct returned during Q1-2013.

Furthermore, with respect to exploit toolkits, the one yet again being distributed most was BlackHole that cyber-criminals used within plentiful operations. To name a few, the huge scams, which abused news of Cyprus' financial crisis, or the pope, enticed victims onto BlackHole-serving websites.

Lastly, amongst the spam sources, USA was in the lead with Belarus, Spain, Argentina and India following.
