Scam E-mails Entitled “Transaction is Complete” Hit Bank of America, Warned by Experts

Softpedia.com published on 2nd August, 2013 quoting security experts saying as "Customers of Bank of America should be cautious that in case they find e-mails with subject 'Transaction is complete" in their inbox."

The bogus e-mails read tell the recipient that his transaction has been completed successfully and gives him a transaction number. It tells him that in case the transaction has been made due to some mistake then he can go on to contact the customer service executives. The Receipt of the payment is supposedly attached with the e-mail.

To make the e-mail look legitimate and authentic it also tells him that the e-mail he (recipient) has received is an auto-generated one so he needn't reply to it."

The e-mail is not from Bank of America and claims about successful transaction are just criminal dodge designed to drive customers to open the attachment. The amount of money transferred varies with diverse incarnations of the scammy e-mail. Experts who are analyzing the latest e-mail scam comment that it is always sufficiently large sum enough to panic users to open the attached file without being caution.

Opening the attached file highlights a file "payment receipt (date).zip" and unzipping the file reveals an .exe file. The .exe file when run will install a computer Trojan on the user's computer and trojans like these can embezzle personal as well as financial details from the hijacked computer and then send it back to the cybercriminals who masterminded the attacks.

Experts said that a legitimate bank or financial institution like Bank of America will never send an e-mail like this and don't be fooled by an e-mail that looks legitimate and appears to link to a genuine website like Bank of America in the above case.

Experts suggest that in case you are jeopardized by this scam then scan your machine with an anti-virus solution and be vigilant about your bank account to figure-out any unauthorized transactions.

Finally, this is the second time that Bank of America has been attacked by online scammers within ten days. On 23rd July, 2013 e-mails entitled 'Merchant Statement' hit the customers of the bank.
