BBB Trojan Let Loose In The Wild

An email assault duping as a complaint lodged by BBB (Better Business Bureau) has infected machines of above 1,400 executives, as per an analysis that a security company published on May 25, 2007.

Businesses have got an email purportedly originating from BBB and containing information regarding a complaint lodged by a customer against the firm. The businesses are asked to either open the attachment or to click on a hyperlink for viewing the complaint's content. Doing this may result in downloading a virus in case appropriate virus-filters and firewalls aren't in place.

The nationwide issue first came up after hackers intruded in to a Georgia company's computer system via a Trojan horse, which captured information and transmitted it to the other website. Since that time, the virus has been replicating itself, initiating fresh attacks.

Besides infecting the computer of that specific user, the virus can access the directory of the computer and/or the network. That automatically sends the message further, thereby causing potential spread of the virus to other machines.

But the assaults haven't harmed any of the BBB machines and no data of BBB has been compromised so far. Till now, these phishing assaults have mainly targeted businesses. The recipients have got counterfeit message via a business email account.

BBB urges recipients of this type of messages to immediately delete the message on receipt, not click on any attachment, & call the Bureau. BBB will then report the assault to the concerned govt. official responsible to address the issue.

The BBB assault is very much like the previous targeted scams against firms, although those assaults typically below ten people per assault. Such assaults are rising with most apparently coming from China.

Computer phishers used phishing to dupe unwary users in to giving out their sensitive information. Scammers always masquerade as an authorized company.

As per Anti-Phishing Working Group's recent report, April 2007 witnessed a two-fold increase in the numbers of new phishing websites. Alarmingly, unique sites grew to 55,643 during this April, as per the industry association, whereas, the number was 20,871 just a month ago (March 2007).
