Cyber-crooks Abuse Image Search on Google for Disseminating Malware

According to security researchers, online crooks are abusing the Image Search of Google a major search engine to proliferate their malicious software. Gmanews.tv reported this on May 7, 2011.

Stated Bojan Zdrnja, researcher at Internet Storm Center, over the past few weeks several reports had been coming in about picture web-links on Google commonly resulting in websites serving fake anti-virus. Although, Google had been steadily eliminating or for the minimum labeling web-links resulting in malicious programs during searches, still its Image Search appeared as inflicted with perilous web-links. Gmanews.tv reported this.

Moreover according to Zdrnja, the crooks managed in hijacking genuine websites such as Wordpress installations; however, they could as well abuse popular software which contained security flaws already familiar in the industry.

And when the genuine Internet sites had been abused, its perpetrators installed malicious Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) Scripts that according to Zdrnja could be plain or advanced in form.

Also, the scripts were designed to mechanically watch over trendy queries on Google as well as craft fake websites having current news events people were much interested in.

Meanwhile according to Zdrnja, a minimum of 5,000 websites had been hijacked, while there could be a good 15m returns on Google taking onto those websites every month. PCWorld.com published this on May 6, 2011.

Said Denis Sinegubko, security researcher from Russia, in line with Zdrnja's observation that in approximately 90% hijacked picture searches from the total, returns associated with malevolent websites showed up among the first ten results. PCWorld.com reported this.

The researcher further said that the chief hazard wasn't that cyber-criminals were able to severely corrupt the results from image search on Google, however, that numerous individuals actually clicked those results and thereby become exposed to malware.

Said Jay Nancarrow Spokesman for Google, his organization was putting best efforts for enhancing both malware detection and search results' quality even while the perpetrators of crime attempted at endangering Web-surfers. He added that while keeping in mind those surfers' interest, Google thought it well not to disclose everything it was doing regarding its enhanced service.
