Storm Diminishes but Web-based Malware Intensifies

Web security provider, MessageLabs, has released its MessageLabs Intelligence Report for April 2008, which reveals that the Storm botnet dramatically declined to 5% of its usual size, whereas Web-based malware represented a 23.3% increase during the month.

While the Storm botnet diminished in size, a study of the Web-based malware led to the identification of 36.1% of interceptions that were new during April 2008, showing a 23.3% increase since March 2008. MessageLabs also found that on an average 1,214 new Websites hosted malware and PUP (potentially unwanted programs) such as adware and spyware each day, marking a growth by 619 per day over the number in March 2008.
