Web based Malware Increases Globally

The data provided on July 30, 2008 by the leading provider of SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) -ScanSafe- revealed that US grabbed the 1st position (42%) among all the countries hosting Web-based malware, which includes password stealers, Trojans, viruses, rootkits and various harmful programs.

Researchers at ScanSafe also revealed that China is at second place with 12% of total attack, followed by Germany with 6% of the total harmful attacks. Further, UK and Russia holds the 4th and 5th rank with 5% and 4% respectively of the total dangerous attacks.

Besides, ScanSafe Researchers also informed that many malware, which were hosted during June 2008, were part of the Asprox fast full bot network systems that were mentioned in the network and trace the origin of the real host. In future, there could be a rise in the hacking of authentic sites that contain content on Olympics to exploit the higher web traffic.

Senior Security Researcher of ScanSafe, Mary Landesman claimed that there could be an increment in Olympics based spam, forum posts and blog comments that aim at luring users to access harmful sites under the charm of viewing videos and various other things associated with the games, as reported by SourceWire on July 30, 2008.

ScanSafe also informed that during the first half of 2008, Web based malware increased by 278%. Therefore, users should not assume that malware could only come from undeveloped sites. Many authentic sites are also attacked and sites containing Olympic based themes can emerge as the prime target area.

It is the corporate users who might face the major problem and witness a hacked site putting networks and propriety details at risk. In several incidents, these hacked sites compel silent installations of password stealers, an aspect of malware that threatens a respective security concern to a complete enterprise network.

With the increase in Web based malware, ScanSafe Researchers persuade companies to have a close look at their acceptable Internet usage rules in view of coming events and plan for requests for Olympic related sites, higher than the normal bandwidth consumption and increased risks of exposure to malware.
