Egham Receives Highest Number of Spam in the UK

According to a research conducted by MessageLabs, an online security firm, Egham has been named the UK's main spam center with business organizations in the city receiving a median of 189 unsolicited e-mails per day.

The study further notes that in the series of most spammed cities, Alton stands second and Petersfield third. They get a median of 167 and 116 spam mails each day respectively.

Other cities among the ten most spammed towns are - Greater London; Macclesfield, Cheshire; Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands; Sutton; Bradford, West Yorkshire; and Dundee, Scotland.

Perhaps surprisingly, the study indicates that not a single dominant urban center occupied any of the places among the top 25 spam towns. For instance, Bristol ranked 167th, Newcastle 166th, Liverpool 99th, Leeds 91st, Manchester 81st and London 28th.

Furthermore, MessageLabs' Chief anti-spam Technologist Matt Sergeant indicates why industries and businesses in small cities are getting more spam mails than bigger towns. According to him, companies in big towns approach Internet security differently compared to the smaller towns, as reported by Webuser on September 25, 2008.

Sergeant added that bigger companies gave more emphasis on better Internet security policies, and such companies are mostly based in the larger towns of the UK.

He further stated that businesses running outside the major cities and towns are usually mid-size or small companies with less resources and time allotted to IT security. Also, small companies actively publicize their contact information to be able to secure contracts, whereas larger companies get business on the basis of their referrals and reputation. Thus, by pushing out the names and electronic addresses of the companies' senior people for public knowledge, cyber miscreants could easily get a hit list for attacking with their spam mails, said Sergeant.

Meanwhile, Researchers at MessageLabs estimated that only 15% of the total spams received were sent from the UK, while the US was the main source for spam mails.

Furthermore, they also said that while Egham is burdened with spam, Fareham in Hampshire is the town receiving the least number of spam, where businesses receive a median of two spam mails per week.
