Hacker Sentenced for Two years Imprisonment By the US Federal

A man from Fairfield, US, tried to close two sites by launching denial of service attacks with zombies. He was punished for two years of imprisonment.

On October 7, 2008, McGregor W.Scott, the US Attorney, announced that 21-year-old Gregory King was found guilty, and was directed to pay $69,000 as compensation, as reported by The Reporter on October 9, 2008.

Also, the reports revealed that Mr. King was known online as sZ, Silenz, Gregk707, Silenz420 and GregK.

Matthew Segal, Assistant US Attorney, prosecuted the case and said that Mr. King accepted of using a botnet to launch denial of service attacks on two business Websites, as reported by CVBT on October 9, 2008.

According to reports, Mr. King accepted of managing almost 7,000 bot computers and using them to target Castlecops and Killanet. Killanet is a forum where members can exchange suggestions on photography, gaming, Web design, and graphic design. It was also targeted in the year 2004, 05 and 06. Castlecops is an online security group, which specializes in malware analysis, anti phishing, and combating spam. It was also targeted in 2007.

Security experts stated that a botnet is formed by networking a large number of malware infected computers (bots), and it is used to launch attacks, sending spam and committing online frauds. Further, bots are used to compromise other systems for expanding the network.

Security experts also revealed that in a botnet attack, the owner of infected systems does not know that his system has been infected with botware. His system is under the control of the person who controls the botnet known as bot herder.

Scott also added that botnets are a menace of 21st century. He further said that attackers must know if they indulge themselves in these activities, they are at risk of facing federal prosecution, imprisonment and a compensation, as reported by CVBT on October 8, 2008.
