Woman Found Guilty in a High-profile Spam Case

A lady, Judy Devenow, an active member of the gang of spamming top dog Alan Ralsky, ahs been accused in charges of conspiracy and assisting fraud in the US Federal Court. Judy was arrested in January 2008 on account of her contribution in a high-profile and complex stock scam in China.

In her statement, Judy confessed that she had been responsible for sending out millions of fake e-mails per day while she was providing assistance to Ralsky. Those e-mails created a lot of excitement about scrap stocks.

Judy further told the US District Judge Marianne Battani that she was fully aware of the fact that those e-mails were meant for encouraging people to buy stocks, as reported by WoodTV on October 14, 2008.

The accused also said that US$ 150,000 was paid to her for sending out the e-mails and deal the others during January 2004 to September 2005. Alongwith Judy, the kingpin Ralsky and nine others were also held accused in January 2008.

According to Thomas Dukes, specialist in computer crimes at the US Justice Department, said that Ralsky sent several millions of e-mails in just 20 months, as per the reports of Spamhaus published on October 15, 2008. The Department of Justice further said that the bunch of cyber crooks used a botnet of infected PCs to send such an enormous number of spam e-mails per day.

The federal authorities told that Judy is currently facing 33 to 41 months imprisonment. But according to reports, her sentence is due in February 2009 and that can be reduced to less than two years if she could convince the federal prosecutors with her support.

As told by her defense lawyer Richard Zuckerman, Judy is ready to give the required assistance, including trial testimony, as reported by Spamhaus on October 15, 2008.

According to news published by Business Center on October 15, 2008, security firm Spamhaus said that Judy, Ralsky and other gang members make use of the infected computers of unaware and innocent people to perform their wicked acts and falsify addresses of the users on spams, causing unparallel damage and loss.
