Hacker Attacked JOGMEC’s Website

Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) unveiled on September 18, 2008 that an overseas hacker attacked their website on July 27, 2008 and infected it with viruses. This statement came after the JOGMEC site got completely fixed following the hacking attack.

According to reports, all the online services of website related to the public database were ceased after the attack. Since then, efforts are being made to find the details of any damage and patch up those damages with the cooperation of an IT security company.

JOGMEC estimated that about 2,400 people accessed the infected website before the problem was ultimately fixed. Infected computers are still supposed of leaking information to the servers abroad. People visiting the site are being strongly advised to use up-to-date antivirus software.

JOGMEC further stated that when the site was fixed on September 4, 2008, its staff observed sluggishness in the loading speed of the site. Then an Internet security company inspected the site and revealed that an SQL injection had infected it and the site had been hacked.

Further, the cyber attack was confirmed on two portions of the four sections, which were reportedly attacked by the hacker. Reports also revealed that the site had been technically refabricated in order to automatically direct visitors to another website. That site facilitates the download of viruses, including Trojan horse program, onto the PCs of visitors.

Moreover, on being downloaded, these viruses permit the cyber crooks to access files, including credit card numbers, name list and other important documents, of the website visitors.

Some security experts are connecting this incident to the exploration projects in East China Sea. It is worth noting that few days before the site was hacked, Tokyo and Beijing underwent their first ever joint gas development project, which was considered as an important step in the age old dispute about the issue.

Further, the Internet security expert at JOGMEC stated that the organization's site has probably been targeted because it was heading the geologic research associated with this gas development project, as per the news published by DAILY YOMIURI ONLINE on October 21, 2008.
