Nigerian Scam Strikes Residents of Albany

The Albany Police of New York are warning residents to be vigilant of an e-mail fraud referred as the "Nigerian Scam". Police report that the e-mail system of the city has received at least three e-mails propagating the scam, with one resident and an area church receiving the fraudulent e-mail.

The particular scam could take up different forms, but the police state it normally involves an offshore country. Also, the scam promises to make a monetary payment to anyone who will help the mail sender in transmitting a sum of money between two bank accounts.

Furthermore, after the contact details, the message usually concludes with getting the recipient's banking information, or demands a processing fee for carrying out the transaction.

According to the police, the e-mail introduces the sender as the Executive Governor of the Bank of Ghana. Then It talks about a financial transaction package that will apparently benefit both the sender and the receiver. The e-mail explains that if the recipient agrees to work with the sender and helps in receiving the money into his bank account, then he would get half of the share.

The e-mail sender also confirms that as soon as he will receive a response, he will provide information on how the user can accomplish the task. The amount to be transferred, says the e-mail, is five million eight hundred and fifty thousand US dollars only. The sender also assures that being an Executive Governor of the Bank of Ghana, he cannot directly connect himself to the money; hence, he is trying to contact other people.

Further, according to the police, over the recent months, residents of many capital regions have been getting malicious e-mails that mostly were part of "Nigerian Scams", And in most instances, the person sending the fake e-mails describes himself/ herself as an agent of the nation or of the bank involved, explains police.

Nevertheless, Albany Police has advised everyone who receive such e-mail to delete it right away and not reply to it with any information.
