Servers Hosting Malware Rise Significantly Since April 2008

According to honeypot experiments conducted by Victoria University (Australia), there has been a dramatic rise in the total number of malevolent servers registered with the .nz domain in the recent few months. In April last (2008), when the research was started, 51 malicious servers were found whereas that number now counts to around 90.

Dr. Peter Komisarczuk, Senior Lecturer at VUW, said that when a request is sent to the compromised address of the malevolent server, a malware downloads. This malware typically represents a piece of obfuscated JavaScript code that would connect to a distant server located outside New Zealand.
