Mexico and Brazil – Home to Malware Infections in 2008Internet Security Threat Report (ISTR) released by Symantec in April 2009 states that malicious code and malware greatly troubled the Latin American region (LAM region) in 2008. Gammima.AG worm was the most commonly detected malicious code in the LAM region during 2008. It propagates through removable drives. This worm steals various online gaming passwords. Mexico and Brazil were the top two nations which reported highest infections from this particular virus. SillyFDC was the second most prevalent malware in the region, accounting for maximum infections to the Mexican computer systems. Brazil, once again, was the second most affected nation by this worm. The worm identifies variations of W32.Silly family of worms and spreads via removable and mapped drives such as USB drives. Rontokbro worm has been given third rank. This large scale-mailing e-mail worm also spreads through thumb drives and USB. To avoid being detected and removed, the worm acquires a versatile approach. It is fully capable of performing Denial-of-Service attacks. Mexico was once more the country in the LAM region which suffered the maximum attacks of this worm, while Chile followed next. Thus, it can be said that Mexico and Brazil seems to be the perfect abode for malicious infections. Trojan Gampass was the fourth major malicious threat in the region, and these two countries were the home to most of its attacks. This Trojan steals Internet game account details and forwards them to a particular website or e-mail address. It also copies itself and acquires an arbitrary name in Windows directory. SillyDC, the fifth ranked malware in the list, has targeted Mexico the maximum, followed by Colombia. It is a generic detection of W32.Silly family of worms which propagates via removable media and is able to install various other malwares. Further, Wimad, Vundo and Gammima have been placed at sixth, seventh and eight spots respectively. Maximum threat due to these malware was faced by Mexico and Brazil. Rontokbro.K and Runauto were the last two positions holders in the list of topmost malicious threats faced by the LAM region during the previous year.
