Microsoft Released Report of Top 5 Malicious Malware Families in UK for H2 2008

Microsoft's "Security Intelligence Report" Edition VI (for July-December 2008) released on April 8, 2009 revealed that threat landscape in the UK was dominated by malware which accounted for 61.3% of total families found on infected systems in H2, 2008.

The worst was Win32/ZangoSearchAssistant, an adware, ranked number one on the list of 25 families. It targeted the maximum number of systems in the UK in H2, 2008.

As per the reports, the adware, which attacked 400,596 systems in the UK during H2, 2008, monitors user's web browsing activities and exhibits pop-up ads associated with the websites user is seeing. Canada is likely to be the region from where the adware originated.

At number two position is Win32/Renos which targeted 329,368 systems in the UK in H2, 2008. The harmful code comes in the group of Trojan Downloaders and Droppers and displays inauthentic security caution to the user. But the chief objective of the Trojan remains unchanged i.e. to deceive the user to install third party utilities like anti-spyware scanners.

Another famous malicious code placed at number three slot of the top 25 malevolent families targeting the UK in H2, 2008 was Win32/Zlob. The Trojan targeted 325,628 systems. Zlob is a family of trojans that changes the settings of Internet Explorer, transmits the default Internet home and search pages, and tries to install and implement harmful software from the web.

The 4th place is occupied by Win32/Vundo. Vundo is a big family of trojans linked with adware. The adware targeted 270,021 systems in the country in H2, 2008.

Security experts state that the 5th place is taken by Win32/ZangoShoppingreports. It is a bizarre adware that reached the top position and attacked 205,727 systems scanned by Microsoft in H2, 2008.

Other leading harmful families were Win32/Hotbar (6th place), Win32/FakeSecSen (7th place), Win32/FakeXPA (8th place), attacking 179,861, 125,321, and 112,358 systems respectively in the country.

In addition, Win32/Antivirus2008 (9th) and ASX/Wimad (10th) are other harmful codes targeting 86,509, and 84,944 respectively in the UK during H2, 2008.
