US Government Warn People about Scams Entailing “Cash for Clunkers”

The US government and consumer information website, "CashForClunkersInformation.org", has issued an alert to consumers about the "cash for clunkers" or CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System) e-mail scam. It also gives precise information on how to ignore scams.

On June 25, 2009, "cash for clunkers", formally called CARS, became a law in the US. CARS is a government plan which helps people to buy a new, more fuel competent vehicle when they trade in a less fuel-efficient vehicle.

However, the government has not worked out the curves yet and hackers are already causing confusion about the program by sending e-mails. In less than seven days, attackers have started websites which are suggesting customers to give their name, address, model number and social security number for registering to the cash for clunkers bill.

Belinda McCormick, Vice President, Huntsville Better Business Bureau, said - spammers are looking for anything they can sway on and steal the hard-earned money of people, as reported by waff48news on July 7, 2009.

Belinda adds that people should not divulge their private details for the Cash for Clunkers plan. She has warned that customers should not visit bogus website and divulge their private details and assume that they are one step forward.

Officials have suggested that people should not register themselves or their cars in the website. The dealership will be accountable for handling all the paperwork. They caution that though there have been lots of authentic sites that were around before the bill was signed into a rule, still people should be alert of any website that claims to register to participate in the program, or ask for any private monetary details.

Officials also add that before approaching dealership to buy a vehicle under the CARS plan, people should contact them and make sure whether they are able to participate. Only a selected number of dealerships will participate in the plan. Each dealership will have to pass an approval procedure by the federal government before time.
