South Korean Police Arrested Hacker for Disrupting Government Website

The South Korean police have claimed that they have arrested a 39 year old man, who is suspected to have been involved in the denial-of-service attacks against a government website.

As per the media reports, the man identified as "Choi" is said to have launched distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against the Government Game Rating Board website. This board rates the content of computer and video games.

It is said that 'Chol' utilized a botnet consisting of 7,400 infected computers to hack the website in March 2009. Moreover, he worked for a software developing company that had been trying to get rating for its video games from the body. He deliberately hacked the website so that he would give an excuse of completing the project late.

Chol is accused of purchasing a hacking software from a Korean in China. He used a server located in Shanghai and mobilized hacked computers to cripple the games rating board's website for 10 times between March 4 and 22, 2009.

According to security experts, one important point to be noted here is that the South Korean police have denied finding of any evidence that connects 'Chol' with the recent denial-of-service attacks against the government websites in the US and South Korea. However, the recent incident easily exemplifies the proficiency of hackers in attacking websites.

There has been huge uproar about North Korea's involvement in the attacks that have disrupted the websites of South Korea and the US government in the last few days. An interesting point that security experts have prominently discussed are the access of innocent users' computers worldwide.

The thing is that its very difficult to hold someone responsible for the attacks, especially government or army instead of an individual or politically motivated hacker who is ready to do anything for getting success.

Meanwhile, the South Korean spy agency believes that North Korea or its sympathizers actually wage the cyber attacks that crippled private as well as government websites in the US and South Korea. On the other side, US experts are divided on the issue as some believe that a communist state might be responsible for the attacks.
