MX Logic – Spam & Malware to Become More Advanced in Sept 09

Online security firm 'MX Logic' has recently released its new study 'September (2009) MX Logic Threat Forecast & Report' that provides detailed information about potential web and e-mail threats, as reported by usa.net on August 31, 2009.

The firm said that spam level would remain at its peak in September 2009 as they might represent over 9 from 10 e-mails.

Considering the trust computer users show on people who they interact with on social networking websites such as Twitter, MySpace and Facebook, MX Logic said that the spam and malware disguising as messages from closed ones would significantly surge in September 2009.

The security firm has illustrated this trend through an example in its report. The e-mail which possibly appears in users' inboxes will say - 'John has sent you a private message on Facebook. Click this link to read the message.' This link will certainly not take the recipient to Facebook but to a malicious website. Given the popularity of these websites, it is quite possible that more of this type attacks will appear with even higher sophistication level in coming months.

It also indicated to the surging volume of healthcare-related spam, which enjoys the position of leading spam category because of high tension debate over reform in the US healthcare system.

The report further states that these highly focused attack become a common practice and usually center around controversial and politically motivated topics, as reported by scmagazineuk on August 27, 2009.

MX Logic also states that many universities and colleges have made clean computer network system their high priority to save students from viruses and malware, a large number of them are still indifferent and reduce investment in security systems to deal with new and more advanced Web 2.0 threats.

Hence, this leaves millions of students vulnerable, which could lead to high level of malware infection on college campuses.

Finally, MX Logic said - cyber criminals, including spammers, malware writers and hackers, will not rest and can strike anytime in any manner.
