Spam Reflects the World Economy

A Kaspersky security researcher, Maria Namestnikova, lately unveiled the relationship that spam hares with the global economy. As indicated by the research, spam has now evolved into a full-fledged industry which flourishes and compresses in tune with the world economy.

According to Namestnikova, the global economy is signified by spam. To be précised, analyzing spam enables to monitor the developments going on in the overall economic condition, according to the blog published by Viruslist.com on March 25, 2010.

To demonstrate this reliance, the researcher uses the correct example of global financial turmoil. According to Namestnikova, first turn down took place in August 2008. It was in this month that the economic crises started off in Russia. The amount orders for spam somewhat increased during August-October (2008), but then the orders declined and could not =match the pre-crisis level.

In spring 2009, the second severe decline took place; this was the bottom of the crisis. There were two reasons behind this decline. Firstly, clients of spammers didn't have sufficient capital to pay for advertising. Secondly, several small and medium-sized firms which used spam to advertise could not withstand the tough economic situation.

But, every sphere of spam-based adverting did not take such a hit. Spam promoting the opportunity to purchase or lease real estate, mainly workplace space left by the old renters, went into overdrive. Usually, the quantity of this kind of spam is insignificant as most real estate firms are reputable companies which would not mull over using spammers' services.

In June 2009, however, the state of the spam industry somewhat changed. Such trends significantly became prolific during August. It was at this time that the clients of spammers started coming back, and there was a rapid growth in the number of spam asked by individual clients. Spam surpassed its usual 50% figure in the month of September.

Summing up the facts, Namestnikova said that relationship shared by the spammer and his client corresponds to the similar pack of business rules that any lawful commercial undertaking would, as reported by SiliconIndia on March 26, 2010. She added that as any other industry, the spam industry is also much prone to alterations in the strength of the domestic and global economy, legal or illegal.
