China Denies E-mail Attack Charges

On April 1, 2010, a spokesman from Chinese Foreign Ministry denied claims that most of the e-mail based malware attacking the United States has evolved from China.

The statement came out after the release of a research report by Symantec, which claims China as the malware source. According to the research report, most of the targeted malware attacks in March this year, which initially seems to have come from USA, actually evolved from Romania and China. The researchers from Symantec found that around 28.2% of targeted attacks actually evolved from China.

The security company also disclosed that Shaoxing is the world's malware capital in last March 2010.

As a result, a team of experts and the Chinese municipal police stated that it is precisely not possible for hackers to instigate attacks with high magnitudes from the servers in Shaoxing city, as per the news published by sify news on April 3, 2010. Further, they also said that whenever spam is sent by an IP address, it will be automatically cut off.

In addition, Meng Xiangqing, a professor with the National Defense University, said that Shaoxing is known for its labor intensive textile industry and had no major IT business or a renowned university or any other measure that can make it the "world's malware capital", as per the news published by sify news on April 3, 2010.

Besides this, the spokesman of Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that passing such a comment is an irresponsible behavior and has hidden objectives, according to the news published by xinhuanet.com on April 1, 2010. He added that cybercrimes, particularly hacking, is strictly condemned as per the Chinese laws, and to combat these activities, the govt. was taking considerable efforts.

Notably, China has been accused for Internet crime several times earlier also. China's military was charged in September 2007 for compromising the Pentagon network. The Chinese authorities, however, refused the accusations, saying that lame charges are being made by people against China. The country also said that people are licentiously saying that China was behind the hacking of Pentagon network. All these charges are groundless clearly demonstrating a cold war attitude, the authorities said.
