India Contributes 9.9% to Global Virus, Finds Network Box

As per the April 2010 Threat Analysis Report of the security firm Network Box, India currently accounts for 9.9% of the overall viruses in the world. In fact, in its March 2010 report, India's share in the world's total computer virus was 3.8%, implying that the country has had a huge leap.

Moreover, India has surpassed countries like the US and Korea to acquire the top slot. In the latest report, accounting for 8.24% of the overall computer viruses in the world, Korea stands at the 2nd spot, and with the contribution of 6.7% to the world virus, the US stands third in the April 2010 report of Network Box.
At fourth position is Russia accounting for 5.31% virus, followed by Brazil at 4.73%.

Vietnam with 3.2%, Colombia with 3.18%, UK with 3.09%, Ukraine with 2.60% and Argentina with 2.12% are the remaining five nations making up to the top ten list.

Simon Heron, Internet security analyst for Network Box, talking on the report's findings said that it is worth remembering that the production of malware is not something static. All that the malware authors need is a computer system with an Internet connection and it won't take much time to compromise vulnerable systems, enroll them into a botnet and make them functional in the malware unit, according to a statement published by Securitywatch.co.uk on April 29, 2010.

The security firm, in its latest report, has also outlined an interesting aspect that India has turned out as a big player in the world of cybercrime. The country currently accounts for 7.40% of the global spam, representing a stride of 0.8% if compared with the report of March 2010. Undisputedly, the US rules the league of spam-relaying nations.

Recently, The New York Times said that India is among those nations which are targeted by spammers to get aid in cracking captcha codes of websites, said Network Box. The newspaper also said that by doing this work, people can earn $6 in every half month. At a first glance, $6 may not appear much, but for low-paid workers and student folks, it can serve as an extra income source. In fact, to some people IT security ethics don't matter at all.
