USA Dominated Total Spam Volume in May 2010

As per Kaspersky Lab's spam report for May 2010, the USA remained the leading country in terms of spam distribution. The quantity of spam evolving from the country rose by 8.5%, returning to its typical level of 20.7%. India with 7.5% and Russia with 5.4% occupied the second and third positions respectively.

The report also reveals that Vietnam with 4.8% and the Republic of Korea with 4.1% occupied the fourth and fifth places respectively.

The report also states that May 2010 witnessed crucial changes for Brazil and China. Both the countries started returning to their positions. They might be seen in the Top 5 soon. The amount of spam evolving from China rose by 2% as compared to April's figure, whereas the amount of spam from Brazil almost doubled (+1.2%), enabling both the countries to secure sixth and seventh places respectively.

On the other hand, Germany and Italy showed some reduction in spam distribution in May 2010. Both of them were not in the Top 10 having circulated 2% less spam as compared with April 2010.

Argentina with 2.1% of the overall spam marked its first ever entry in May's Top 20.

Accounting for 2.7% of spam, the UK spam distribution rose by 0.4%, helped the country to secure the ninth position.

In addition, the report highlights that the Medications and Health-Related Goods and Services category continued to dominate the English-language spam. During May 2010, this category's share stood at 30% on an average, and during the second half of the month, it reached 45-46% of the overall amount of spam.

Further, the Computer Fraud category stood at second position although the amount of this kind of spam reduced a little against April's figure (-3%). The fake DHL notifications discarded by harmful code distributors were taken up by fraudulent spam authors. The amount of the Personal Finance category rose by (+5%) as compared to April 2010 and held third position in May's Top 10 most popular spam categories.
