Warwickshire - UK’s Most Spammed County

MessageLabs released its report "MessageLabs Intelligence Special Report: Spam rates in The United Kingdom" in the first week of July 2010. The report stated that in the United Kingdom, Warwickshire was the highest spammed county, with spam level of 93.7%.

According to the security firm Symantec, other high spam counties of the United Kingdom are Merseyside (92.2%), Herefordshire (91.9%), Antrim (91.6%), Ayrshire (89.9%), Bedfordshire (89.7%), Surrey (89.6%), North Yorkshire (89.1%), Highland (88.9%) and Angus (88.7%). The counties, which recorded the least spam levels, are Ipswich and Worcestershire. Another county called Coventry has also registered an alarming spam level of 92.8%.

Commenting on the above mentioned findings, Paul Woods (MessageLabs Intelligence Senior Analyst, Symantec Hosted Services) stated that the latest study showed that look could be misleading. No town or city, irrespective of its size, showed resistance against cyber criminals, as reported by messagelabs on July 14, 2010.

It has also been highlighted in the report that in the United Kingdom, the highest spammed sectors are Telecoms, Accommodation & Catering and Education industry. On the contrary, the Automotive, Recreation and Estate Agents sectors are the minimum spammed sectors.

A similar report for Germany has also been released by MessageLabs called "MessageLabs Intelligence Special Report: Spam rates in Germany". The company has stated that highest spammed city in Germany is 'Hamburg' with a spam rate of 95.7%. This is followed by cities like Berlin (94.3%), Kempten (94.2%), Lingen (93.6%), Karlsruhe (93.0%), Bottrop (92.3%), Neumarkt (92.3%), Stuttgart (92.2%), Bochum (92.0%) and Düsseldorf (92.0%).

It is also mentioned in the report that Estate Agents industry receives the highest spam rate of 95.9%. Other top spammed sectors are Wholesale (93.8%) and General Services (93.4%) industries. Employees of the Finance sector have to worry the least as they have seen a lesser spam rate though their email have around 86.0% of spam.

Wood reveals that the analysis shows very clearly, that spam isn't a problem which only affects big cities and economic hotspots where large-scale enterprises are based, as reported by messagelabs on 14th July 2010.
