Cyber Crime – A Menace for Everybody

On July 14, 2010, speakers at a conference on 'Digital Technology in Crime Investigation' held in Hyderabad shared their views on the increase in cyber crime. They state that various stake holders should constantly and effectively share information in order to control the crime.

They opined that the rise in cyber crime had shaken everybody staring from the regulatory authorities, stakeholders to the crime bureaus of the nation.

The representative of several government and private agencies attended the conference. They include: Crime Investigation Department (CID), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Reserve Bank of India (RBI), NTRO, Futuristic Technologies and I2 Technologies.

Earlier cyber crimes were committed to feel proud and arrogant. However, now cyber crimes have become more systematic and professional business.

Hackers have introduced several forms of committing attacks. These include ID theft, hacking, spamming, phishing, virus introduction, cyber terrorism, attacks on critical infrastructure, etc.

S S Sarma, a CERT representative, talked about the recent trends in cyber crime, for instance Botnet (groups sending out virus from systems through internet without the knowledge of user), website compromise and the difficulties in conveying such issues to the police, as per the reports by THE TIMES OF INDIA on July 15, 2010.

Sarma informed that one of the harmful activities that these Botnet groups did lately was whenever a bank URL gets started, key logger software automatically downloads in the system and starts sending details of the account.

In April 2010, nearly 17 Lakhs systems in India had been discovered to be a part of a Botnet group.

The security experts state that India has witnessed a tremendous increase in cyber crime rate. This is because of numerous reasons. The most important one is that India lacks a strong and effective cyber law. Instead of being an effective cyber law of India, it has proved to be counter productive.

This situation has made India a hub for hackers and hacking is rising at an upsetting rate. Moreover, lack of any effective cyber security and cyber forensics capabilities lead to the growth and unguided cyber crimes.
